ARTISTIC EDUCATION
He’s a self-taught painter, engraver, sculptor and artist. Since his youth, he has had an aptitude for painting at first, and for form later; he read art books about the great masters of impressionism and expressionism. He regards the street as his teacher, but he also owes a lot to his mentor the painter Raul Bartoli (macchiaiolo), to Ricci Guido as for sculpture and to Luciano Buongiovanni as for engraving. These experiences, together with his curiosity, led him to create strength and grace in the chromatic traces and in the compositional structure and also to research, to experiment and to create through strokes, “macchie” (spots of colour) and forms. He imagines everything with strong emotions.
THEMES AND SUBJECTS
The first dialogues of the artist were with things and nature. Sandro Carloni’s expressive means brought him towards a figurative art style that can still be defined as “modern”. His subjects – nature, the sea, bushes, and colours – aren’t represented as they appear but as he sees them: through meditation and the stories communicated by those subjects in that exact moment, an emotion is sparked and appears as an image or a form. That’s how his works come into the world; then, thanks to his endless curiosity and ongoing research into various techniques, his own hands play with sketches, colours, shapes, base and surfaces specifically made with various materials such as wax, wood, jute and stones.
TECHNIQUES
Throughout his career he has used different techniques, such as pencil, Indian ink, engraving, etching, drypoint, watercolour on drypoint, watercolour, oil painting on canvas, matter oil spread on jute and sculpture.
